This bowl of SOPA sucks!

Stop the Sopa Bill

Stop the Sopa Bill

Normally, we stay away from politics in public, but the current bill, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is detrimental to anyone using the internet. On January 24th, the US Senate will vote on this internet censorship bill.  This bill affects us all.

If you use the internet…it affects you.

SOPA Blackout Day

This bill is so freaky that huge sites are demonstrating by having a blackout day on January 18th. The sites participating will display a black screen from 8am – 8pm on Jan 18th.

Google, Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Go Daddy oppose this bill.  On January 24th it goes to vote in Congress. Take a moment to have your voice heard: http://americancensorship.org/

Don’t know about SOPA?  Take a look at this graphic or watch the video below. Better yet, let your voice be heard.

The people writing these laws are not the people writing the independent web, and they are not out to protect it. We have to stand up for it ourselves.

Guilty!  Now prove your innocence.

We have our own opinions of the way governments like to control its citizens.  In the U.S.the legal system maintains that the burden of proof is on the accuser, and that people are innocent until proven guilty. This tenet seems to be on the chopping block when it comes to the web.  If these bills pass, private companies could shut down sites based on accusation alone.

The recent SOPA-related boycott of GoDaddy was all over the news, with many people expressing their outrage over the possibilities of SOPA, but when I ask people about SOPA and its sister bill in the Senate, PIPA (Protect IP Act), many don’t really know what the bills propose, or what we stand to lose. If you are not freaked out by SOPA/PIPA, please: for the next four minutes, instead of checking Facebook statuses, seeing who mentioned you on Twitter, or watching television, watch this video (by Fight for the Future).  (above paragraph from WordPress).

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Got a WP Blog? Participate in SOPA Blackout Day

Download this SOPA plugin from the wordpress site to participate in the January 18th blackout. OR this one that will post a black ribbon on your site, like you see on ours. But, don’t forget to…

Great post! I have Jeff working on an article right now. So glad a lot of the travel bloggers are coming out on this. The more people that spread the word the more people will see it and protest it!

I feel confident it won’t pass! Let’s hope I am right:)

There is already talk of it being a “flawed bill” and that the White House won’t support it. The usual fluff. I am sure it will show up again, hidden perhaps, in some other bill.

Oh boy – what next! We aren’t meant to drink real cows milk, nor are we meant to be eating healthy organic food….because then we would be too healthy!
We are supposed to go to the doctors when we are sick (luckily we have never done what we are supposed to do in our house!) yet we can buy ciggys that will give us cancer.
When will they realise that we are not going to be controlled? Its a scary thought to think that this law could be passed in and accepted!
    Cheers
    Lisa
